ARC – Agricultural Research Council

Agricultural Research Council (ARC) established in terms of the Agricultural Research Act No 86 of 1990, represented by Dr. Shadrack Moephuli in his capacity as the President and CEO of the ARC, he being duly authorized thereto.

Activities

ARC will mainly contribute to the project through WP3, in particular co-leading Task 3.2 “information systems”.

People

Dr. Shadrack Moephuli is the President and CEO of the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) South Africa, a responsibility he assumed in 2006. He currently serves as a member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) that reports to the Minister for Science and Technology. In addition, he currently serves as a member of the AU – EU High Level Policy Dialogue Working Group (HLPD – WG). He served a term as a member of the boards of the South African Weather Services and the South African Forestry Company Limited. He was also a member of the Genetic Resource Policy Committee of the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Before joining the ARC he held several positions of responsibility with the Agriculture Department of South Africa. While in the Department of Agriculture, Dr. Moephuli also served as the country’s representative on science and technology in agriculture at the international level in a number of organizations; specifically, the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD), Cartagena Protocol for Biosafety (CPB), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He obtained his doctoral degree in Biochemistry from the University of Connecticut, USA.
Dr Mthuthuzeli Andrew Magadlela is currently Group Executive for Animal Sciences at the Agricultural Research Council. He is former General Manager of the ARC’s Animal Production Institute of the ARC. He boasts nearly 15 years in research management at the ARC and in academia. Before joining the ARC 14 years ago he was head of the department of Livestock and Pasture Science at the University of Fort Hare. He is an accomplished agricultural scientist with varied research, teaching, community outreach and managerial experience in the agricultural space. With 30 years post-graduation experience in the sector, he holds a doctoral degree in Animal Nutrition.
Dr Petronella Chaminuka is the Principal Economist at the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa. She heads the Economic Analysis Unit, which is responsible for integrating socioeconomics in ARC research programmes, and evaluating the impact of ARC research and development programmes to guide investment decisions. Petronella holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and an MSc in Agricultural Economics from the University of Zimbabwe. She has more than 20 years’ international experience working as a lecturer, researcher and facilitator in rural development processes. Her research interests are in Agricultural and Food Policy Analysis, Food Security & Livelihoods Analysis, HIV/AIDS and Gender Integrated Planning. With extensive experience working in multidisciplinary teams, she has participated in many international collaborative projects focussing on capacity development and research. She has authored or co-authored articles in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and numerous short articles and several reports from commissioned studies. Petronella participated in WP5 of the ProIntensAfrica project and participated in several workshops of the CAASTNet Plus projects.
